Polar Bear extends warm welcome to Columbian and US divers

January 12, 2012  - For immediate release

Winnipeg -   From January 20th to 22nd, 2012, Winnipeg will see divers from Saskatoon, Calgary, Thunder Bay, Regina, as well as North Dakota, Minnesota and even Columbia participate in the 44th Annual Vaughan Baird ‘Polar Bear’ Invitational Diving Competition.

“The Polar Bear is typically an exciting event as many divers are at their first competition of the season, trying out new dives and techniques,” says Dallas Ludwick, High Performance Coach of the hosting Winnipeg team ‘Revolution Diving’ and Canadian National Team Coach. It is the first time the club will host and compete since re-uniting with the previous club that was Pan Am Diving. Revolution is home to 2011 Pan Am Games bronze medalist and 2011 Canadian National Champion Kevin Geyson.

“Of course we were thrilled to receive the registration for divers from the US and especially Columbia. The three boys range in age from 12 to 15 years. We plan on making the experience great for them by greeting them at the airport with winter coats and boots and ending their visit with a fun evening of sledding or skating.  Hopefully this marks the return of the competition to attracting international divers as it did in the past,” says Ludwick.

As the first qualifier of the year for the 2012 Age Group Nationals held later this summer, many junior divers are competing for the first time this season.  Divers competing range in age from 8 years old to 27 and represent the future of the sport.

Day one gets underway at 9:00 a.m. Friday, January 20, 2012 at the historic Pan Am Pool, 25 Poseidon Crescent. The last event is the “Open Platform” scheduled to begin at about 2:40 p.m. Sunday the 22nd. Viewing of all events are free and open to the public and spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer on these young athletes.
